“ROZANEH” ENSEMBLE
This Iranian Ensemble is a women sextet, who interprets mystical Iranian poets.
“Rozaneh” means hope and light in Persian.
The singers of the Ensemble were trained in “Avaz”, the classical vocal répertoire, by the great Master Sharam Nazeri. Interviewed at length, they do not speak on the condition of women artists in their country. But they proclaim their admiration for the Sufi poet Rumi. “He is my master, my physician and my source of inspiration. He teaches me about life, death, love, pain and joy”, says Zohreh, who is one the Ensemble’s member. Persian mystical poetry is an expression of the different stages and states experienced on the spiritual journey.
Iranian traditional music and poetry, with a history stretching back several thousand years, have always been a source of mutual inspiration. Shihabuddin Suhrawwardi, the thirteenth-century Iranian master said: “God reveals himself through music without a veil to those who have reached spiritual perfection”. The Ensemble’s sweet voices, wide, full, slightly trembling, sing “O God, bestow upon me a heart as vast as the sea”. In the Iranian mystical tradition, the spiritual seeker's final goal is the loss of his limited self in the unlimited ocean of divine presence or God. Love is the elixir of this alchemy of transformation.
