GREGORIAN was born from seeds planted one day many years ago while Frank Peterson was visiting the cloisters of the Escorial Royal Monastery in Spain. Wandering the medieval passageways and listening to rock music on his Walkman, the sounds of the monastic choir nearby melded with the music he was listening to - an experience which inspired him to begin experimenting with the idea of combining rock music with the tones and sounds of Gregorian chant. That experiment came to life in 1990 with the global phenomenon Enigma, which Frank Peterson was co-creator and credited as “F. Gregorian” (with Michael Cretu a/k/a MC Curly). The recording of the first Enigma album, ”MCMXC A.D.”, sold over 16 million copies, and featured GREGORIAN chants on several tracks, including the global hit “Sadeness Pt. I”. This success paved the way for Frank Peterson to take GREGORIAN a step further and venture out as a stand-alone act, and their debut album, GREGORIAN - MASTERS OF CHANT was released worldwide in 1999.
In the ensuing years, GREGORIAN proved to a huge success, recording almost 250 songs across 13 album releases and 6 DVDs, selling over 5.5 million albums and achieving Gold and/or Platinum status in 16 countries.
Every year, Frank Peterson retreats to his studio and his extensive personal music collection to find the perfect songs for the next GREGORIAN - MASTERS OF CHANT release. Frank’s own musical taste is very diverse and ranges from classical to rock, and the GREGORIAN albums reflect this in a wide variety of song selections. Interest and appreciation of GREGORIAN’s music has spread over the years, and their appeal reaches audiences of all ages and lifestyles. The challenge for Frank is finding songs that fit with the Gregorian scale and sound and yet will continue to appeal to this rapidly growing audience – a challenge he looks forward to with eager anticipation - how else could a Coldplay ballad be found next to a Depeche Mode industrial tune, or a spheric Pink Floyd song next to a gutsy Metallica rock anthem? On occasion, the GREGORIAN albums venture into unusual territory - the Dark Side and Dark Side of the Chant reflect Frank’s underground and heavy metal tastes with songs from AC/DC, Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein, while Christmas Chants show off a more traditional side yet maintains the GREGORIAN’s unique style.
Every album also contains original compositions written by Frank Peterson and his creative team Carsten Heusmann, Jan Eric Kohrs and Gunther Laudahn, expanding the GREGORIAN repertoire even further. Even the concert performances reflect Frank Peterson’s hands-on approach and personal touch with the show’s quality of production. The live show features eight classically-trained singers attired in beautifully designed crushed velvet monk’s robes, accompanied by a female vocalist and backed by a rock band, and occasionally an orchestra, of first rate musicians, with special effects ranging from fire, fog, wind, pyrotechnics and mirrors to projections and lighting effects. GREGORIAN have performed their critically acclaimed spectacular live shows in venues ranging from sport arenas to landmark cathedrals and from historic theatres to amphitheatres, in countries throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Over 1 million people in 20 countries have experienced GREGORIAN live, and many more watched their almost globally broadcasted television specials. Future plans for GREGORIAN include a resident show at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas and a new album in 2012 called Epic Chants.
