Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin

Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin (short: Akamus) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. It was founded in 1982 in East Berlin. It is one of the leading chamber ensembles today. The orchestra regularly appears in the most significant concert halls in Europe, Asia and both Americas. Each year Akamus gives circa 100 concerts, ranging from small chamber works to large-scale symphonic pieces. The orchestra performs under the leadership of their four concertmasters Midori Seiler, Stephan Mai, Bernhard Forck and Georg Kallweit or guest conductors. Almost 25 years ago Akamus started to collaborate with René Jacobs and under his direction the orchestra regularly takes part in opera and oratorio productions. The recording of Mozart’s opera Magic Flute under direction of Jacobs received very positive reviews from both German and international critics and was honoured with the German Record Critics' Award. The ensemble works regularly with the RIAS Kammerchor as well as with celebrated soloists like Cecilia Bartoli, Andreas Scholl, Sandrine Piau and Bejun Mehta.
Moreover, Akamus has extended its artistic boundaries to work together with the modern dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests for productions of Dido and Aeneas (music: Henry Purcell) and Medea (music: Pascal Dusapin).
