Leszek Mądzik
Born in 1945 in Bartoszowiny, near Kielce. He graduated from the Catholic University in Lublin (KUL) and from the Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Białystok as Master of Art; he took his doctoral studies at the Fine Arts Academy in Warsaw. In 2010 on application of the Board of Graphic Department of the Fine Arts Academy he was nominated to the title of professor. In 1969 Mądzik founded the Scena Plastyczna K.U.L. (The Visual Theatre of Catholic University in Lublin) and since then he has created several premiers, among others: Ecce homo 1970, Wieczerza (Supper) 1972, Ikar (Icarus) 1974, Zielnik (Herbarium) 1976, Brzeg (The Edge) 1983, Wrota (Gateway) 1989, Tchnienie (Breath) 1992, Szczelina (The Crack) 1994, Kir (Pall) 1997, Odchodzi (Passing Away) 2003, Bruzda (Furrow) 2005, Przejście (Transition) 2010. Scena Plastyczna KUL have taken part in overt fifty international theatre festivals being awarded with many prizes and distinctions (for example: critics’ award for Wilgoć (Moisture) at the festival in Cairo; award for the stage design, direction and theatre technique for Zielnik (Herbarium) at the festival in Japan; special prize at the Theatre Festival in USA; special mention at the Prague Quadrennial – International Exhibition of Stage Design. As a stage designer he has cooperated with many theatres in Poland, Portugal, France and Germany. He was invited to conduct numerous theatre workshops with students by many universities and artistic schools, among others in Helsinki, Berlin, Amsterdam, Washington, San Francisco, Bonn, Hamburg, Lyon, Prague, Buffalo, Rennes, Dublin, Riga and Poznań. In 1986 he directed his own play Pętanie (Binding) for Polish Television Theatre. He is a member of the Association of Polish Art Photographer. Exhibitions of his works took place in: Galeria Krytyków “Pokaz” (Critics’ Gallery “Show”) in Warsaw, Gallery of Polish Institute in Vienna, UNESCO Centre in Beirut, Opera Gallery in Cairo, the Manggha Centre of Japanese Art and Technology in Cracow, Museum in Lublin, Art Gallery of the Catholic University in Santiago de Chile, Theater-Cai in Tokyo, National Museum in Wrocław, The Saddlery Gallery in Edmonton/Canada, Theatre Museum in Warsaw. In 1986 he initiated the Art Gallery of Scena Plastyczna KUL, where dozens exhibitions of works of the most prominent Polish culture artists were presented. He is the originator of the Modern Sacred Arts Museum in Kielce; the author of numerous posters and book drawing. He is the laureate of many prizes and awards (among others: the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Golden Cross of Merit, Silver Medal Gloria Artis, special distinction Totus). He is a professor at the Faculty of Visual Communication of Journalist Institute of the John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin.
